Veterans Day is a federal holiday to honor our country's military veterans. The holiday began as an observation of the Armistice the Allies signed with Germany to end World War I.

The U.S. Congress passed legislation designating the third Monday in January a federal holiday in honor of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The bill because law in 1983.
In 1878, the U.S. Congress declared George Washington's birthday to be a federal holiday. The first observation was February 22, 1879. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1970 changed the date of the holiday to the third Monday in February.
With President Jimmy Carter's proclamation in February 1988, the U.S. began to observe Women’s History Week inclusive of International Women’s Day (March 8).
This celebration occurs during the week that includes President James Madison's birthday and National Freedom of Information Day—March 16.
