The Illinois General Assembly will hold a Special Session starting Wednesday, May 20. This session will have a narrow focus. Several of these areas are of special concern to LWVIL: the COVID-19 pandemic, state budget, the 2020 General Election and State Board of Elections.
LWVIL's Virtual Lobby Day on March 18 ended in a request for members to tell legislators they support the following:
Sending a ballot to every registered voter and funding the resources necessary to handle the increased response to voting by mail.
Increased funding for basic human needs, including access to health care, housing, and food.
Check out LWVIL's website to get contact information for Senate and House Appropriations Committee Members, a script to use when speaking with legislators, their Lobby Day presentation, information on the COVID-19 and Economic Emergency Renter and Homeowner Protection Act, a Vote By Mail video, and material that may be used on social media.
The Illinois State Board of Elections and the Chicago Board of Elections will also be meeting to discuss plans for the election. Once these groups act, we will keep our members apprised and indicate what actions we can take.
